Illiberal, Liberal, and Nationalist/Separatist Protest Events Across European Democracies, 1995–2020
This dataset, which is currently being finalized, captures protest events associated with illiberal, liberal, or nationalist ideologies across 41 European countries from 1995 to 2020. The regional categories from the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset are used to identify the countries considered part of Europe (Gleditsch et al. 2002; Davies et al. 2024; Pettersson 2024). Only years during which these countries are classified as liberal or electoral democracies, according to V-Dem's regime classification (v2x_regime variable), are included (Lührmann et al. 2018; Coppedge et al. 2024).
Protest Events of the Gezi Park and Yellow Vests Movements
This dataset includes protest events from the Gezi Park and Yellow Vests Movements. Using LexisNexis® Academic, newspaper articles from The Independent, The Independent News and Media, The Observer, and The Guardian were searched for relevant keywords. The search covered the Yellow Vests Movement from November 16, 2018 to January 3, 2019, and the Gezi Park Movement from May 31, 2013 to July 25, 2013. Variables include actor, action type, target, issue, location, date, and newspaper source.
